3 Things to Know If You Have Gum Disease

Gum
If you find out that you have gum disease, you might wonder what it is, how you got it, and how a dentist will treat it. These are all good questions to ask your dentist. You might also want to ask your dental clinic if they offer the latest form of treatment for gum disease, The Perio Protect Method. This new treatment offers a lot of benefits over traditional treatment options. Here is what you need to know about gum disease and this treatment.

1. What Is Gum Disease?
Finding out you have gum disease is not pleasant. Gum disease is a serious infection caused by bacteria, and it can lead to teeth loss and jaw bone mass loss if left untreated.

Gum disease occurs in stages, and the beginning stage is called gingivitis. If you have this and do not treat it, it will worsen. Visiting a dentist is the best way to find out if you have gum disease; however, you could also know whether you have it by looking for the signs and symptoms that occur with this disease.

A common symptom of gum disease is bleeding gums. If you notice blood in your mouth when you brush or floss, this should alert you of a problem. Other symptoms include swollen or red gums. If your disease has progressed, you might even notice that your gums appear to be receding.

2. How Do You Get It?
Anyone can develop gum disease, but you are more likely to develop it if you don’t have good oral care habits. Good oral care habits require daily brushing and flossing and regular visits to a dental clinic.

Poor oral care leads to gum disease for one main reason: plaque. Plaque is something almost everyone has on their teeth, but you can remove it when you brush and floss. Dentists also remove plaque during regular cleanings. If you do not remove this substance, it ends up getting trapped under your gums, and this leads to gum disease.

Plaque is full of bacteria, and it is the bacteria that causes the disease. This bacteria could also get inside your bloodstream and cause other health problems.

3. What Are the Treatments for It?
When a dentist diagnoses gum disease, he or she might recommend a traditional form of treatment, which is called scaling and root planning. Scaling and root planning is a very deep cleaning of the gum lines. Unfortunately, this procedure is painful and time-consuming, and most people would rather not go through it.

Today, many dentists offer a different type of treatment for gum disease. As mentioned earlier, new treatment is called The Perio Protect Method.

The Perio Protect Method offers a less painful way to treat gum disease, and it is FDA approved. With this method, a dentist places trays of antimicrobial agents in your mouth. This solution also contains hydrogen peroxide gel. The purpose of using this is to kill the bacteria inside your gums.

In addition to having this procedure completed in your dental office, your dentist might also give you trays to use at home. The dentist will give you instructions as to how often to use these trays and how long to keep them in your mouth, which is normally around 10 to 15 minutes. When you use the trays and solution at home, the solution continues to kill the bacteria in your mouth, which helps stop the disease.
